Snow Leopard

Facts

• On a Snow Leopard's back and sides the fur can be up to 5cm thick, and 12cm thick on their belly
• A Snow Leopards tail can be up to 105cm long, and in addition to helping with ballance it can be wraped around them for warmth
• Although their main prey in Napal is the blue sheep Snow Leopards also eat ibex, Himalayan tahr, marmot, pika, hares, small rodents and game birds
• Their short forelegs and long hind legs allow Snow Leopards to traverse the terain of their habitat
• Although they can yowl, Snow Leopards can't roar
• Snow Leopards are more related to Tigers than they are to Leopards
• Snow Leopards can travel 25 miles in one night
• Snow Leopards have been known to jump up to 6 times their body length,, 9 meters

Main Threats

The short answer to, what threatens snow leopards? Is: humans. Hunting, habitat loss, declines in natural prey species, and retaliatory killings are the main threats to this animal, all threats posed by humans. Climate change is also a big factor, impacts of a warming climate may lead to a loss of up to 30% of the snow leopard habitat in the just the Himalayas. The WWF is helping by working with communities in the Eastern Himalayas to monitor snow leopards and lessen the retaliatory killing of them by installing snow predator proof ways to keep lives stock.
